NBN Fixed Line Connections
Fibre to the Premises (FTTP):
Uses an optic fibre line running from the nearest available fibre node directly to the premises. The connection requires an access network device that operates with power and is installed inside your office. Only approved NBN installers or phone and internet providers can carry out the installation.
Fibre to the Curb (FTTC):
Used when fibre is extended close to the premises, connecting to a small Distribution Point Unit (DPU) that is generally located inside a pit on the street. The existing copper network is connected to the fibre to form the final part of the connection. An NBN connection box is required inside the office to power the service with electricity. Any router with an ethernet WAN port can be connected to the NBN connection box.
Fibre to the Node (FTTN):
Uses the existing copper phone cabling from a fibre node (likely to take the form of a street cabinet) to make the final part of the NBN connection. Each node allows the data to travel over optic fibre line from the exchange and connect with the copper cabling to reach the premises. FTTN connections utilise the existing phone port and require a VDSL2 compatible router.
Fibre to the Building (FTTB):
This connection is similar to FTTN except in this case the node is placed in the communications room (often found in the basement) of an office or apartment building. VDSL is employed to send the data from the building’s communications room to individual apartments
Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC):
Used in circumstances where an existing ‘pay TV’ or cable network can be used to form the final part of the fixed line connection. HFC lines will run from the nearest available fibre node to the premises, with the NBN access network device to be installed at the point where the line enters a building.
FAQs
FTTN: Fibre to the node has a fibre connection running to a mini-exchange or node near your premises, which is then connected from that point to your property through a traditional copper line.
FTTC: Fibre to the curb uses a fibre connection almost all the way to your home, taking advantage of the existing copper wiring to complete the connection between your home and the curb.
In a nutshell, if you have the option to upgrade to a FTTP connection, you will enjoy faster internet, now who doesn't want that?
Speed and Reliability*. An FTTP connection will lead to an improvement in transmitting signals which results in faster upload and download speeds. In simple terms, you can download media faster and enjoy it without lag/buffering.
FTTP is the best nbn™ connection for future-proofing your premises due to its superior speed and potential for future expansion.
It costs $0 to upgrade
*not available at all premises. Actual speeds may vary due to external factors including in-building wiring.
An FTTP requires an nbn® technician to connect a PCD (premises connection device) on the outside of the premises and then install the NTD (network termination device) on the inside of the premises. As part of fibre connect, an nbn® technician will have already done the work outside in the street before your address becomes eligible. Our website will advise if a FTTP upgrade is available at your address. Your property may not be eligible straight away, and nbn® will make more addresses eligible over time.
Once you place your order, Squareone will organise an nbn® technician to come out and install NBN equipment in your property. Once the process is complete you will be able to use and enjoy your new connection!
